Staff from Catholic Charities of Oregon visit encampments of people who are homeless throughout the week, no matter the weather.
Laden with backpacks full of food, water and other supplies, the workers walk the streets of inner Southeast Portland and the Hollywood district, two of the areas with many residents sleeping outside.
Staff respectfully approach tents, identify themselves and tell occupants what is available. In addition to supplies, the workers give suggestions about obtaining housing.
One of the most important aspects of these visits is consistency, which is a way to build relationships and trust, the best atmosphere for helping someone work toward self-sufficiency.
