Families delighted by supplies for infants
Catholic Charities of Oregon is grateful for the generous donors who give diapers, wipes and baby supplies that go to needy families. Most of these items are donated via our Amazon wish list or Traveling Crib program, where Catholic parishes and organizations fill up an empty crib with donations for our pint-sized neighbors.
The supplies are given to low-income parents in our programs including at food pantries at the agency’s affordable housing sites. The joy is palpable as the moms and dads see the little coats, outfits, diapers and blankets and know that their slim budgets are being saved by receiving the donated supplies.
Keeping the donations organized is a job for the agency’s Community Services department, led by Sally Erickson. Recently, Erickson and her sister-in-law Cheryl Darby spent several days sorting and stacking in the Catholic Charities basement. Darby went through infant clothing and created bags with complete outfits that easily could be handed to parents in need.
Other volunteers, including a young mother, have helped keep the supplies in good order.
“Diapers, wipes, strollers and other supplies are expensive for families who are low income or between jobs,” says Erickson. “These donations really help parents make ends meet.”
