Housing Transitions Program

The Housing Transitions Program is one of Catholic Charities' newest programs and builds on our long history of serving homeless individuals. This program's unique outreach and support to homeless women extends the work that Catholic Charities has provided to the homeless since the late 1990s.

Services Provided:
  • Outreach, support, advocacy and case management services to homeless women and children, with a special emphasis on helping chronically homeless individuals access and stay in affordable housing
  • On-going support to individuals and families living in Catholic Charities' housing projects

The Housing Transitions Program works closely with many of the organizations in the Portland area that assist the homeless community.

The purpose of the Housing Transitions Program is to provide permanent housing to homeless women and offer the support services they need to remain in housing.

Linda's Story

Would you like to volunteer?

Volunteers are at the heart and soul of what makes Housing Transitions a welcoming place.  Women who come in for day services appreciate the sense of community, the respectful atmosphere, and a “women only” place just for them.

There are opportunities for one-time volunteers (assisting with moves, participating in events), or “regulars” who become a part of our family.  We welcome groups of volunteers from churches, schools or community groups if given one month notice.

Most volunteer opportunities include an orientation and training and possibly a criminal background check, and a reference check.  Typical volunteer opportunities include:

  • Community Friend
  • Driver
  • House Assistant
  • Computer Assistant
  • Move-In Assistant

Recent Donors

Housing Transitions was delighted to learn that we are on of seven recipients of a $10,000 Community Housing Award grant from HomeStreet Bank.  The grant will allow us to provide rental application fees and deposits for ten women, and one-time rental assistance to ten women who are in housing, but at the risk of losing their housing due to a temporary financial crisis.  We are so grateful to HomeStreet for giving us the opportunity to serve women in such a concrete, specific way.

Housing Transitions has also been very appreciative for the use of free storage at A-1 Storage in SE Portland over the last several months.  This generous in-kind donation of $1,000 has allowed us to store many items that we were unable to store in our warehouse over the summer.  Thanks go to A-1 and manager Jerry Read for their generousity.

The Sisters of the Holy Names have also been generous over our past year in operation.  We have been the recipient of several thousand dollars in furniture donations to furnish our women's 1st apartments, and have also been the recipient of many in-kind donations to support our thriving Ready to Rent program.  Thank you Sr. Jane Hibbard SNJM, Sr. Janet Ryan SNJM, Dave Hibbard, and the Sisters of the Holy Names.

What is Ready to Rent?

Ready to Rent is a housing readiness program of the Housing Authority of Portland.  This 12 hour training will help you become a better renter, help you learn more about yourself, and help you resolve past issues you may have had as a tenant.  Ready to Rent also offers graduates a $2000 landlord guarantee- a reimbursement program which encourages landlords to take a chance on you. Contact us about training dates.  Ready to Rent is offered four times a year.
