Help Us Make A Difference: Volunteer!
The work of Catholic Charities is firmly rooted in the rich gospel tradition of Catholic Social Teaching. Our mission is to serve those most in need of help. We welcome and coordinate hundreds of volunteers who play a critical role by giving their time and energy to serve the poor and vulnerable among us.
Volunteers are a valuable resource to Catholic Charities staff and the people we assist. Catholic Charities seeks to ensure that volunteers have meaningful and fulfilling experiences, have adequate supervision and are treated in a respectful manner. Catholic Charities hosts periodic volunteer recognition events to acknowledge the contributions of those who donate their time to help the poor and vulnerable. Volunteers shall agree to actively perform their duties to the best of their ability and to adhere to the policies and procedures of Catholic Charities.
Volunteers are welcomed without regard to faith, race, ethnicity, marital status or condition in life.
Prior to serving, a volunteer must complete an application and volunteer packet.

Current Specific Volunteer Needs:
Family Mentor/ESL Tutors for Bhutanese and Burmese Refugees: The Refugee Resettlement program of Catholic Charities is currently looking for volunteers who would like to assist Bhutanese and Burmese (from Myanmar) refugee families in their transition into life in Portland. Both groups are coming from extremely difficult conditions in their home countries and countries of refuge and need many good people to walk alongside them here in the U.S.! We are looking for folks who would be interested in visiting these families at least once a week for 2 hours for at least 6 months. Family mentorship could include: cultural/community orientation, assistance in learning about household management/budgeting, and fun outings to places like the Gorge, etc. We are also looking for English as a Second Language tutors. No prior tutoring experience is necessary although it is most welcome. Please contact: Erin Carkner at 971-222-1883 x 223 or ecarknerccrrp@hotmail.com if you are interested!
Moms Helping Moms (MHM) Mentors - Pregnancy Support & Open Adoption Services: To act as a mentor and positive role model to pregnant women or newly parenting mothers by providing a listening ear, friendship, insight, practical experience and emotional support; example assistance could include: encouragement, transportation to a doctor’s appointment, help preparing meals and solicited parenting advice. The search for MHM mentors is on-going. There are periodic meetings between all MHMs, an initial orientation, and resources for the MHM to utilize. Pregnancy Support & Open Adoption will maintain an active role in supporting this relationship for up to six months. Mentoring can then be independent of our office. MHMs may choose to mentor someone new at that time. For more information, please call 503.238.5196
